In 1633, the bubonic plague has spread across Europe which caused the suffering and death of many. One in four people is believed to have died.  And so as a desperate plea for their lives, the villagers of Oberammergau vowed that should they be spared from this, they would put on a ‘Play of the Suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ every 10th year forever after. Legend has it that after the pledge, like a miracle, no one else in the village died from the plague.

And since then, consistently, every 10 years, the Passion Play is being performed by participants who were born or who have lived there for at least 20 years, from actors to members of the choir, orchestra members, firemen, and ushers.

However, the whole world was stopped by another pandemic in the year 2020 which caused the postponement of the play. In 2022, the passion play in Oberammergau will be performed once again for the 42nd time. As big as the faithfulness shown by the villagers to the pledge they made to God, Insight Vacations, is also committed to allowing more people to access this once-in-a-lifetime experience while watching the play with the best seats in the house, and while staying in the center of this historic town.
